My Brace Journey || Lifestyle

Hi Everyone!

Today I wanted to share with you something not many of you may have known. I recently had braces for just over a year and got them taken off in December of last year. My teeth weren't that bad before I had them but they needed a few adjustments and my dentist recommended that I were to have them and honestly it was one of the best ideas I've made. So, through the power of blogging I thought I'd share with you my journey.

Before
Before I start, I apologise for the bad quality of the first picture. I tried to find a picture where you could clearly see my teeth before I had braces and this was the best one I could find! My dentist recommended that I should get a brace around summer of 2011 but I insisted that I didn't want to have them for my year 11 leavers prom or my holiday to Skiathos. Thankfully he understood (what a star) and delayed my referral to the orthodontist. It came to around August/September when I started going to my orthodontist where he took photos, moulds and scans of my teeth to get a good picture of what was needed to be done. I'm going to be honest, the moulds were disgusting and left me with pink clay-like stuff all over my mouth! Attractive.

Getting the Brace
After the preparation, I was then given two appointments to get my brace fitted. The first appointment was to fit the brace for my top teeth. My orthodontist glued little metal brackets on every tooth and then clipped in a metal wire to tighten them together. This hurt. It felt so weird having my teeth pushed tightly together since that wasn't their natural position. A month or so later I went back for my second fitting which was for the brace on my bottom teeth. At the same time I also had my top brace tightened to push them together more. My bottom teeth did hurt a lot more than my top teeth, I think this was due to the fact that they needed more work done and so had a tighter wire. It wasn't nice!

During the Brace
Throughout my time of having a brace I had to go for regular check ups so that my orthodontist could tighten them. I hated getting them tightened because he would have to unclip the existing wire and replace it with a tighter one, which usually caused me a lot of pain for a couple of days after. I remember waking up loads one night due to the pain and it honestly made me cry so much!
Cleaning them was also a difficulty. You can buy mini toothpick like brushes to get in between each metal bracket. Cleaning them was really annoying, you could brush your teeth as normal but it was so tricky especially when your teeth are in pain. I couldn't wait for them to be taken off so that I could brush them properly again.
I didn't have elastic bands like most people do however, towards the end of my brace journey, my orthodontist fitted some on, just to push them that last little bit. He also reshaped some of my teeth to make them fit together straighter but also look aesthetically pleasing.

Getting the Brace Off
I could not contain my excitement for getting my brace taken off, especially since I would have it off for Christmas! I had my last few appointments to do the finishing touches and it soon came to the big day when I no longer had a metal mouth. I had two appointments: one to take the actual brace off and get fitted for my retainer and then the second was to be given the retainer (which I will go on to next). It felt so weird to feel my teeth and not have anything in the way, they just felt smooth. I remember looking in the mirror and thinking that my teeth had become bigger so I was worried what people thought of them!

After
After I had my braces taken off I felt like I could smile properly again. I hated smiling with braces and always thought I looked miserable with my mouth closed when I was trying to smile on photos. My teeth felt really big but I think it was just cause I wasn't used to them without braces! I was given a plastic retainer which I had to wear for around three days after to get used to the shape but then I just had to wear it every night for bed, and still do, to stop them from moving back to their natural position. You have to make sure they're kept clean and to be honest, I sometimes forget to put them in or quite frankly can't be bothered. They do feel quite tight when you first put them in and can be annoying after a while which is why I always can't wait to take them out in the morning!
Another great feeling is eating an apple. I know that may sound weird, but when you have braces you have to stay away from any hard foods and so biting into an apple is a long lost memory. IT's great to have that back again ;-)

Getting braces was probably one of the best decisions I've made and I don't regret it at all. I'm so happy with how my teeth have turned out and after a year and 3 months, they were totally worth it! Just think, it takes a year to two years for your braces to work, but the rest of your life to have a perfect smile. If you're thinking about getting braces but are worried about how they might look or feel, don't worry about it! Yes it does cause some pain but you get used to them and the end results are always great!

Hope you all have a great week!

By wearing them with jeans, shorts or skirts, you can create a casual everyday look or even dress it up a little. Also, by wearing a collared shirt underneath, it would make a cute preppy look. Since spring is coming up, and I say coming, it feels like it's still winter out there. Anyway, the weather is still freezing cold and a coat is an essential in every girl's wardrobe. Boyfriend coats are a big trend at the moment, whether they're pastels, bright or just neutral. I thought I'd put a little collection of these coats which I found online that I quite like (and really want!). Some are more affordable than others but overall they're a must for spring! The boyfriend fit makes it a lot larger than usual but the colours and styles create a casual look into a more chic one.

MAC Studio Fix Concealer || Review

I love having a flawless base to work with and having the right concealer makes a huge difference. I've been wanting the MAC Studio Fix Concealer for a long time now and I've heard a mix of reviews over it so I thought I'd give it a try for myself. I bought this with some Christmas gift cards as well so it was a bargain, usually priced at £15.00!

I have this in the shade NW15, which I think is the lightest shade in the collection. The girl at the MAC stand picked this out for me and I have to say it is the perfect shade for my skin. The consistency of the concealer is quite quite thick but slightly creamy. At first, I wasn't to keen on the thickness of the product but as I got used to wearing it I found that it worked quite well on particular areas of my skin. I would use this mainly on blemishes or any specific redness I have around my face, mainly around my nose. I find that it can be quite heavy for an under eye concealer and I prefer to use my Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer, which is a liquid form. However, the colour of this is great for brightening my under eye circles and it does give good coverage, but I have found that it doesn't last as long as my Collection concealer and can tend to crease slightly, which is a no no!

Have you tried MAC Studio Fix Concealer? What's your favourite concealer?

Maybelline Brow Drama || Review

I have a confession. When it comes to my eyebrows, I don't really do much to them. My eyebrows are already quite thick and dark so I feel that if I fill them in anymore they'll look like slugs glued to my face, and nobody likes that look. To keep them in shape, I get them waxed once every three or so weeks because I can't handle having stray hairs. I usually use a clear brow gel to keep the hairs into place and that's it. But then I discovered Maybelline's brow drama...

This product not only tames my brows but adds a slight bit of colour and dimension to them, creating a fuller brow but not too overdone. I chose the colour medium brown as I thought this was a similar colour to my natural brows but not too dark to make them look overpowering. The applicator is perfect for creating a natural brow shape which is great and I don't have to worry about taking extra brushes when I'm travelling. It is much easier than filling them in and helps particularly when in a rush! It leaves a slight crispiness to your brows which I don't really like but not as much as other brow gels I've used in the past.

It only costs £4.99 which I think is an absolute bargain! You can buy it at any drugstore and for those who are girls like me and don't really fancy filling in their eyebrows then this is your baby!

Revlon Lip Butters in Wild Watermelon and Strawberry Shortcake || Review

The Revlon Lip Butters are one of my favourite lip products from the drugstore. I began my 'lip butter collection' back in the summer of 2013, with my first being 'Juicy Papaya'. In fact, this was my first ever product that I had bought from Revlon so you know, I thought I'd buy some more. I had a mini make up haul back at the beginning of January and saw that there was an offer on in Boots which was two for £10 on Revlon Lip Butters so I thought, oh go on Charlotte, you need more...

I bought two: Wild Watermelon and Strawberry Shortcake. Wild Watermelon is a bright red, perfect for summer and Strawberry Shortcake is a neutral baby pink, great for adding a hint of colour. I apply these on to the lips and sometimes dab them in to create a more subtle and natural effect. They are very pigmented, which is surprising for a lip butter, however still maintain a nice sheen. The products are moisturising and very easy to apply as they have a very creamy consistency and actually feel like they're doing good for my lips.

I've been wearing Strawberry Shortcake a lot recently as it's the perfect colour to finish of a natural look. I love wearing Wild Watermelon for a splash of colour if I don't feel like doing much on my eyes. They're priced at £7.99 from Boots or Superdrug and I would highly recommend buying them. I definitely need more for my collection.

What's In My Bag || Winter

Hello Everyone!

I've been meaning to do a post like this for ages now and so I thought why not spend my night writing my own for you all to read. The 'what's in my bag' tag has always been a favourite read of mine - probably because I'm nosey but shhh, no one needs to know that!

My bag is from Marks and Spencer and cost £35, however I still had gift cards left over from Christmas and so in the end only had to pay a tenner! Bargain! I normally use this bag for weekends, if I'm going shopping let's say, rather than for sixth form because it would just get wrecked from all my books. I usually keep the same items in my bag and just throw stuff in when I need to. I hate having an unorganised bag so I try and keep it as neat as possible but, like every girl, it just never happens.

  • Iphone 5C - White - My one and only.
  • Purse - Cath Kidston - Full of receipts.
  • Diary - Paperchase - I like to be organised.
  • Pen - Paperchase - An essential!
  • Notebook - TK Maxx - Incase I need to jot down some blog ideas or make a few lists.
  • Make Up Bag - Urban Outfitters - I'm a girl, this is a must:
    - MAC Studio Fix Concealer
    - Rimmel Stay Matte Powder
    - Maybelline Falsies Mascara
    - Rimmel Moisture Renew Lipstick 'Let's Get Naked'
    - Real Techniques Powder Brush
    - Real Techniques Deluxe Crease Brush (Concealer)
  • Hat and Gloves - Accessorize - Well, it is winter.
  • Mirror - Cath Kidston - To check that face of yours.
  • Emergency Kit - Cath Kidston - A life saver, something always happens when I'm out and I stress that I need something:
    - Plasters
    - Paracetamol
    - Travel Sickness Tablets
    - Tissues
    - Hand Sanitizer
    - Hand Cream
    - Lip Balm
    - Soothers
  • Deodrant/Spray - Just incase you start to get a bit smelly.
